The Phantom Switch™ Specifications and Datasheet
Phantom Switch™ Specification
Diesel Exhaust Filter System
Radio Controlled
- Dual cool path intermittent non-burning emissions filter system consist of an exhaust stream diverter valve, ceramic wall flow filter in a full-surround barrel housing, electromagnetic actuator, and a booster relay, radio frequency receiver, and microprocessor in a weather tight enclosure.
- The soot trap filtration system shall be all electronic, 12 Volt negative ground, and not require on-board compressed air supply. The system shall be capable of being operated on any diesel engine or machine, mobile or stationary.
- System shall be installed downstream of the muffler-spark arrestor, and divert exhaust gas to filter or to atmosphere. System shall not be located between manifold and muffler (divert to muffler or filter) because of the danger of hot gas ignition.
- Phantom Switch™ Smoke BlotterĀ® shall operate by remote radio signal, switching into purification mode when the engine approaches or enters a protected zone, i.e. the source of the signal transmitter, and remain engaged for however long the engine stays within the protected zone. Receiver shall be programmed to respond to the code setting of the transmitter. There may be any number of filter systems on vehicles, responsive to any number of different transmitters, placed at different locations.
- Filter shall be made of porous-wall cordierite ceramic honeycomb material 11.25 in. dia. x 14.0 in. long, designed and manufactured for the purpose of capturing airborne particulate soot from emissions of internal combustion engines.
- The ceramic filter element shall be jacketed in welded stainless steel with heatproof cushion material at both ends.
- The filter cartridge shall be capable of an indefinite number of regenerative cleanings by the system manufacturer at nominal cost and quick turnaround by common carrier, UPS, or parcel post. Frequency of cleaning depends on factors of engine size, engine condition, use, and quality of fuel.
- The filter cartridge shall itself fit completely inside a durable metal full-surround barrel housing and stone-guard to provide maximum protection from weather and traffic damage. Filter cartridge shall be changed by removing three 1/4 in. dia. machine screws.
- Diverter valve cube shall be installed in the engine's existing exhaust pipe or stack. Inside the cube, a flapper valve shall divert the exhaust stream to the filter when the engine is within range of the radio transmitter (approx. 130 ft in test conditions) with a signal delay of approximately 5 seconds, or else divert to atmosphere when out of range.
- The diverter valve box shall be aircraft grade aluminum all-welded construction, with no bolts or screws, in order to minimize exhaust leak. The box shall not require RV sealant or any kind of sealing caulk. The device shall be connected to the existing exhaust tubing with 2-bolt super-duty gasketed clamps. Field burning and welding are not permitted.
- Diverter action shall be accomplished by a heavy duty dual coil electromagnet, with a booster relay module to supply sufficient surge to pull, then instantaneously reduce to low wattage to hold the diverter in position, so that the battery cannot be drained by any malfunction of the filter system.
- Fail-safe spring return shall be provided to ensure that the system remains closed except when triggered. Spring shall be external of the valve cube to resist high temperature. Spring shall allow excess gas to escape to the tailpipe when the filter is saturated, relieving backpressure and preventing engine stalling, or potential damage to the valve box. Air actuation can leak and lock the brakes; and lack of relief mechanism can cause the diverter valve box to explode. Therefore, air-dependent actuation is not acceptable.
- Phantom Switch™ controller shall consist of a radio receiver and booster relay housed in a weather-resistant oil-tight gasketed enclosure 6 x 6 x 4. The microprocessor receiver shall have a preset code, which can be set by dipswitches to respond only to the low frequency transmit signal. The controller shall feature two LED lights to indicate system "on" and "backpressure", and hour meter to clock cumulative usage in hours and fractions of hours. Electronic devices shall be protected so that memory is not erased if the engine batteries are disconnected.
- All emission control system components shall be first quality parts designed for heavy duty trucks and agricultural equipment.
- All parts not specifically mentioned here, but which are necessary in order to furnish a complete, automatic, on-board exhaust particulate source capture system.
- System shall be installed at the location determined by the Owner. Engines will be made available as scheduled, and installer may work successive hours. System shall be capable of being installed by Owner, and routinely serviced and maintained by Owner's mechanics or by the manufacturer's local representative.
- Limited warranty will be provided for defects in materials and workmanship for a period of five (5) years from date of installation.
- Specification criteria are to establish a standard, and not intended to exclude any item or manufacturer. An item shall be considered equal in quality, durability, function, appearance, strength, and design when it is intended for the purpose of diesel exhaust filtration, will perform equally to the functions imposed by these specifications, and conforms to the detailed requirements. Identification of all materials and features other than those herein described shall be plainly explained as exceptions to the Technical Specifications with the bid; and such exceptions shall be approved in writing by the local awarding authority prior to purchase, use, or fabrication of such items.
